Pop Stars: May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.
Anybody who really knows me is fully aware that I’m still convinced I’m going to be the next Disney Channel star. In the meantime I can still pretend, right? In the age of social media we can be anyone we want to be. I may not be famous, but thanks to my followers sometimes I feel like I am. I can shape my persona to be anything I want it to be, and every Halloween I channel that into my favorite celebs. Let’s take a walk down memory lane through my favorite Halloween costumes:
2010: This night is sparkling, don’t you let it go. It was the year of Red, Taylor Swift’s third album had just been released that month in true Taylor fashion (every October), and I wanted to be my favorite pop princess. It’s easy: curly blonde hair, sequin dress, cowboy boots, a red lip and good to go! And what would Taylor be without her latest boy toy to pen her next album about? Taylor’s never dated a Met player other than in my Halloween fantasy, but that doesn’t mean she won’t. Heck, anyone of the male specimen that Taylor is seen with is considered her boyfriend, so according to the media it’s not impossible! I respect her being a true romantic. Keep living your wildest dreams, Taylor.
2011: This year’s most likely to be talked about: Mother Monster and the train wreck of the year himself (still love you, Charlie). An unlikely couple, but I feel like these two would be friends IRL…it would be one epic party to say the least. No matter which version of Lady Gaga you dress up as, you’re sure to make heads turn and feel like the queen of pop for a night. And no matter which version of Charlie Sheen you are, you're sure to be doped up on cloud 9 for the night (or life).
2012: Risky business: a cult classic, and it’s comfortable! Need a last second costume? You’re sure to have all the right accessories at home without even having to buy anything! You can’t go wrong with Tom Cruise unless you falsely think you’re a mixologist from Cocktail, that could be dangerous for all involved.
2013: We can’t stop, and we won’t stop! After seeing Miley twerk up close and personal at the VMA’s, I knew I had to be her for Halloween. I was shocked that it was nearly impossible to find an official costume, aside from whatever was homemade on eBay or Etsy. I wanted the real deal, and I eventually found a loophole that the costume was exclusively sold through Spirit Halloween – only on mobile. This secret didn’t even surface until a few weeks before Halloween, and so much to my surprise, I was the only Miley at the clurb (my boyfriend was not the only Robin Thicke however, which was more surprising). This was for sure my night of being a popstar, strangers sang “Wrecking Ball” to me and took pictures with me all night long. The people of Atlantic City couldn’t get over it! I will always love this costume for the 15 seconds of fame it gave me, and also because it was super cuddly and I could’ve gone to sleep in it.
2014: Allow me to reintroduce ourselves, we are Mr. & Mrs. Brady. I had always wanted to dress up as a Victoria’s Secret angel, but how to make it a couple’s costume? Be Gisele and Tom of course. My boyfriend was thrilled, it was the easiest costume ever and he loved the fact that he was wearing shoulder pads so he could bump people at the club if they weren’t giving us enough personal space. For me it was a dream to have my life-size wings that were surprisingly light as feathers (ha!). This costume was a real showstopper and I wish it was everyday life. Being a VS angel is empowering, I never felt more confident!
2015: Taylor gang for life. What’s almost as good as being Taylor Swift? Being a part of her girl squad of course. My favorite girl squad member in particular being Gigi Hadid. I knew Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video could make an epic costume, and I was on a mission to find Gigi’s exact bodysuit. I almost didn’t find it in time, but I was so shocked that I actually did! It’s not exactly your run of the mill everyday bodysuit. I loved the drama about this costume, it was fierce!
2016: Happy Chanel-o-ween bitches! Scream Queens squad was in full effect for Chanel and the gang. Attitudes were just as much a part of these costumes as the outfits were. The key to looking and acting like a Chanel is channeling your inner spoiled rich b*tch and looking good while doing it. Thankfully, there were no Red Devil murders this night.
2016: The iconic duo Harley Quinn and her puddin’ Mr. J with their new Suicide Squad makeover. 5 hours of hair and makeup and this will always be one of my favorites. The tireless amount of work I did ordering each piece separate from all different countries to put together the most authentic costume possible. Comic-Con goers should be jealous of this movie quality. Being Harley makes you feel as invincible as Mr. J’s love. I owned the night, but when don’t I, right? 😉
2017: A unicorn may not be a celebrity per se, but it is a mythical creature and that should count for something. This costume gave all the Ke$ha vibes while I was throwing glitter and making it rain. I love electric hair colors and it was entertaining having it sway from head to toe with all my manes on top and bottom 🦄
2017: He who shall not be named and his most valuable horcrux. I collected pieces for YEARS to perfect my Nagini costume before I was ready to finally pull the trigger on it. Even these pieces were altered turning a skirt into shorts and shortening the length of the boots. I’ve had years of experience wearing contacts, but this was my first time wearing colored contacts let alone snake eyes! I don’t think I was able to see all night, but I knew I looked 🔥
2018: I’m A Slave 4 U - it’s Britney b*tch! Is there anything more iconic than this outfit and above all this performance?! Especially now in the day of Tiger King, if I would’ve known 2 years ago I would’ve had a stuffed tiger too (and maybe someone dress up as Doc Antle to deliver it) 😂 As she sang it best, I really felt like I was Miss American Dream since I was 17. This wasn’t my first Britney costume, and it certainly won’t be my last.
2018: Too dirty to clean my act up! X-Tina here to serve up some 90’s realness. Every costume is a chance for me to live out my dreams and these pants were EVERYTHING. Nothing can make you feel as confident as these outfits, I can only imagine if it were a regular wardrobe for every event. 2019: Mom, I am a rich man. Bob Mackey designed every single one of Cher’s iconic costumes, and when I designed this one, he gave me the recognition I deserved by reposting me on his own Instagram! I was both floored and honored, he is a true visionary to the industry and I am eternally grateful for his praise.
2019: Welcome To The Jungle. Once I saw Rihanna’s epic take on Slash, I had to recreate my own. I loved transforming this costume as a woman and making it that much more BO$$. Since I’ve been doing two costumes a year, I like to make them thematic such as 2018 being 80’s icons. It’s my goal to impersonate as many icons as I can, and I’ve got so much more to come.
Let me tell you when it comes to authentic Halloween costumes, perseverance is key. I always stress myself to the last minute even though I start planning and buying in August (I’m always ready for Halloween), but it’s always worth it. Every year the idea’s get grander and the budget to boot, but every year you get one day to be anything you want to be. I have too many ideas and not enough youth, which is why I try to double up on parties and get two costumes a year. When it comes to Halloween, be bold and ghoul all out! What will we be this year?
